Karaoke machine discovered to be interfering with policing in Canada

People love karaoke and are always buying machines for themselves. Some purchase a model called the SoundStage Party Cube. it’s cool because it comes with a wireless mic, allowing the performer to roam about the living room untethered.

About 905 of these Party Cubes were sold in Canada between March of 2023 and June 2025. There’s now a Health Canada recall for the machines.

Wait–what? Why would Health Canada be concerned about a karaoke machine? Electric shock issues? Fire hazard? Worried that someone will choke on the microphone?

No. It’s because the frequency used by the wireless mic interferes with those frequencies used by police and EMS. Health Canada warns that the potential injury hazard involves those who need a cop or an ambulance. If a machine interferes with radio comms, then response time could be compromised.

Although no incidents have been reported as of the end of July, the recall is proceeding. If you’re one of the 905 owners of this thing, look for the  UPC number 796167901488. And it’s just the mic, not the Party Cube itself. If you provide Automobility, the manufacturer, photographic proof that you destroyed the mic, they’ll send you a new one free of charge.
