Kurt Cobain’s last house has been sold for the first time in 23 years

In January 1994, flush with money from the sales of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love plunked down US$1.48 million for a new home in Seattle. Built in 1902, the house at 171 Lake Washington Boulevard East in an affluent area of the city called Denny Blaine. It’s next to a small park, surrounded by high trees, and featured a two-story greenhouse in the back. We all know what happened on the top floor of that greenhouse on April 5, 1994.

The house was eventually resold in 1997 to Euyang Walter Jr, a Seattle businessman, who immediately had the greenhouse torn down. He paid US$2.9 million back then. A detached garage and a retaining wall were added in 1999.

This summer, after 23 years, Mr Walter finally sold the property after listing it back in 2019 for US$7.5 million without showing any interior photos in the ads. The deal went through almost a year ago–August 24, 2020–but has been kept quiet until now. The final selling price was US$7,050,000.

We don’t know who the new owner is–the buyer is listed as CSK Washington Investments–but he/she/they now has a tourist attraction, whether they like it or not.

Taxes are around US$52,000. And if you want to look at the property records, go here.

  • Interesting that this LLP was only incorporated in July 2020, seemingly purely to purchase this home fairly anonymously. A director is named (another corporation) and a lawyer is named as director/executor.

    • We can only hope that this isn’t due to intentions of capitalizing on the history of the property.
But if that were to be the case, I sincerely hope that our society has the collective decency and restraint necessary to ensure the failure of any such venture.

  • Check out the band thenceforward song is called from within they’re on YouTube and the only reason why they made it on there is because fans like me put them on there from the record they released I wrote them a letter in 1995 when I was 11 years old when I got the record I got the guitar chords it’s somewhere in my room but they’re if you’re really in the love of music like I am you check it out I’m mostly do a little rap and rock music but the music can’t go unknown you got to check these guys out as far as Kurt Cobain goes you’re a journalist I got my haircut at Elmwood plaza in Racine Wisconsin back in 1995 there’s a lady who cut my hair she showed me a nice big black and white photo of Kurt Cobain from the death scene his eyes were laying next to his head on the floor just thought I’d let you know fortunately I don’t know where I put the copy of it

    • I can’t believe that part with the photo being real. It was a 20 gauge to the temple but it doesn’t line up with other things I read or saw. I am interested if you can find it for research, but it shouldn’t be public. I don’t know if you want something for it. I don’t even like looking at these things… Email or something.

  • It’s too bad the old owner tore down the Greenhouse. Regardless, the new owners should fill the place up with some Nirvana memorabilia. Pictures, posters, get a couple of Kurt’s guitars, maybe some of his concert worn clothing if possible and turn the place into a museum/tourist attraction. Charge like $25 a pop for a walk through of the house and the yard, could have charge more with the greenhouse there though.

    • That’s a great idea , but some of the proceeds should go to helping addicts get clean and suicide prevention /mental health .

    • This is disgusting. Someone was murdered here. Yesss murdered just wait a few you’ll see. Check out how Courtney live already tried to have another “suicided”. She is one sick bitch I can tell you this much if I thought my husband was suicidal and I was across the world and only had a bicycle I would like to him. She was hours away and didn’t give a shit. Either way she obviously killed them but if you look into the case, listen to her voice via the Tom Grant tapes, it’s pretty dang obvious she had this whole thing organized and poor Kurt probably only realize this right before he died so I think this whole thing is disrespectful as shit

  • I wanted to buy the house and rename it Garden Lodge like Freddie Mercury’s home in London.

    • Did you legitimately look into purchasing the home?

  • Let’s be clear, Kurt Cobain was tragically murdered in this home. It was not suicide. 😭💔

    • Don’t be ridiculous, conspiracy theories are never true, and you didn’t know Kurt. NO one who knew him believes murder

  • The Realtor here. The house now belongs to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They insisted on keeping the blood-stained hardwoods in that infamous room. Shortly after closing, they began drawing pentagrams on the floor where the suicide (murder?) happened, with sidewalk chalk of all things. Quite odd, I thought, but hey, a sale is a sale.

    • What? I thought the previous owner tore the green house down? Unless that’s who your talking about, the people who 1st purchased the house. So to get this straight. The people who purchased it after Kurt, tore the green house down, but kept the blood soaked wood to draw pentagrams on it? In chalk? It’s a good thing that’s not public/fan knowledge.

    • Tim Dillon,You’re ridiculous! Bill and Melinda Gates have never owned that house, much less wrote anything in the room where Kurt died. The greenhouse was torn down years ago! You sound like you believe in Qanon too, with your silly stories. I doubt you’re even a realtor.😂

    • Struggling to believe that you would have knowledge of the entire “sidewalk chalk/pentagram” story. How in the world would you know such a thing? I’m sure something like that would be kept extremely quiet, I would think.
