Let’s check on the Canadian sales battle between CDs and vinyl

I have a feeling that vinyl is going to have a good holiday season, especially with the Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. CDs will still outsell vinyl in terms of sheer units (compared to new vinyl, anyway) but 2025 should be the year that vinyl becomes the biggest-selling format for physical music.

  • Total CDs sold in Canada last week: 33,544 (That’s up 7.4% from the previous week. I wonder how many of those were Taylor Swift records? Just wait until the first of six Toronto shows kick off tonight.)
  • Total vinyl sold in Canada last week: 31,931 (Up1.3%. Ditto re: Tay-Tay)
  • CDs sold in all of Canada so far this year: 1,419,309 (Down 1.6% from a year ago)
  • Vinyl sold in all of Canada so far this year: 1,271,863 (Up 27.1% from this point in 2023)

Streaming stats (these may start to get warped by people streaming Christmas songs very soon):

  • Songs streamed in Canada last week: 2,723,045,728 (Down 1.3% from last week)
  • Songs streamed in Canada in all of 2024 so far: 122,748,119,280 (Up 10.0% from this time last year)
