Let’s check on the Canadian sales fight between CDs and vinyl

We haven’t seen this much competition between CD and vinyl sales since sometime in the early 1990s, maybe even the late 1980s. Luminate has again provided figures on which format is doing better this week.

  • Total CD sales in Canada in 2024 so far: 1,049,748 (down 13.9% from this time last year)
  • Total vinyl sales in 2024: 919,432 (up a whopping 29.7%)
  • CD sales sold in Canada last week: 28,619 (down 3.1% from the prior week)
  • Vinyl sales last week: 22,854 (down 3.5% from a week earlier)

From the looks of things, CDs will end the year outselling vinyl, but the gap between the two is getting narrower.

Now let’s talk about streaming.

  • Songs streamed in Canada last week: 2,701,997,799 (up 1.6% from a week ago)
  • Total songs streamed in Canada this year: 89,713,398,235 (ahead by 10.8% over 2023)
