Let’s check on the Canadian sales race between vinyl and CDs

There’s new data from Luminate, the company that measures all manner of music consumption in Canada. What’s having a better year, vinyl or CDs? It’s interesting: While CD sales are down year-over-year and vinyl sales are up substantially, CDs overall sales lead is slowing increasing.

Let’s take a look.

  • CD sales so far in 2024: 440,599 units (a drop of 22.1% from this point last year)
  • Vinyl sales so far in 2024: 410,781 (up 25.5% from a year ago)
  • CD sales for the week ending April 11: 31,928 (up 12.2% from the previous week).
  • Vinyl sales rom the week ending April 11: 28,415 (up 20% from the previous week).

The next set of stats will be compiled over the weekend. It’ll be interesting two weeks from when vinyl sales for Record Store Day 2024 will be part of the stats.

As for streaming:

  • 39,719,957,188 songs have been streamed by Canadians so far this year (up about 11%)
  • Last week, we streamed 2,778,910,701 songs, up 4.6% from the previous week.
