Let’s check on this week’s numbers for the sales battle between CDs and vinyl

The way things are going, CD sales will end 2024 higher than of fresh vinyl, but each week, the gap between the two is getting smaller. If the trend continues, vinyl records will outsell CDs sometime in mid-2025. Here are the latest numbers courtesy of Luminate.

  • CDs sold in Canada so far this year: 1,146,897 (down 13.2% from a year ago)
  • Vinyl sold in Canada so far this yea: 1,002,960 (a bump of 30.1% this point in 2023)
  • CDs sold in Canada last week: 31,246 (down 0.8% from the week before)
  • Vinyl sold in Canada last week: 29,510 (ahead by 15.& from the previous week)

Streaming adoption continues apace.

  • Total on-demand audio streams last week: 2,726,234,622 (down 0.6% from a week earlier)
  • Total on-demand audio streams so far this year: 97,884,200,847 (up by 10.7% from this point last year.
