Let’s look at this week’s Canadian sales battle between CDs and vinyl

We haven’t seen this kind of format horserace since sometime in the early 90s. Who would have ever thought that vinyl would come back to the point where it’s challenging CDs for the top format for recorded music? And again, these figures from Luminate (the music consumption monitors) only include new vinyl and nothing used sold elsewhere.

  • Total CDs sold in Canada this week: 30,710
  • Total vinyl records sold in Canada this week: 29,230
  • Total CDs sold in Canada so far in 2024: 1,205776
  • Total vinyl sold in Canada this year: 1,058,924

As for streaming:

  • Total audio streams in Canada last week: 2,804,235,831
  • Total streams in the whole country so far this year: 103,440,868,551
