Cool!

Listen to the Solar System Sing

No, this isn’t another interpretation of Holst’s The Planets. It’s actual music made by actual planets.

The orbits of all eight planets (plus poor demoted Pluto) of our solar system can be predicted within tiny tolerances. Looking at things from a big picture perspective–a really big picture–the solar system can be imagined as a giant mechanism.

What sort of mechanism? Well, how about a music box?

This is the concept behind Solarbeat, a site that turns the motions of the planets into ambient music. It was first unveiled five years ago but now requires an update because of new data sent back from Pluto by the New Horizons mission.

This is a good background stuff for a Monday. Hit “play” and let your day be accompanied by the movements of the heavens.

I wonder why Brian Eno didn’t think of this first. (Via Peter)
