Listening to a $4,000 Vinyl Record on $6,000 Headphones
Okay, so I haven’t actually done this–but I’d like to.
First, the record. A company called the Electric Recording Company specializes in high-end classical reissues which includes a seven-LP Mozart box set that’s been limited to just 300 copies. It can be yours for just £2,495 (about $3,800). Not only does it sound great, but the whole package is gorgeous.
The Guardian has an interesting interview with extreme audiophile owner, Pete Hutchison.
Obviously something that has been recorded and assembled with great care needs to be heard on proper equipment. This is where Sony’s MDR-R10 headphones come in. A pair can be yours for just $6,000.
A full review of these cans can can be found at CNET.
And since we’re on the subject of things we will never see let alone own, what about this gold-plated iPad?
You’re given one of these when you check in to the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. (I once went there for a cup of tea in the lobby cafe; I think it cost $50.) No, you don’t get to keep it, but it does serve as a “virtual concierge” during your stay. (Via Gizmodo)
Hmmmm, wonder how they sound compared to these: http://wiki.faust3d.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sennheiser_HE90
Had the pleasure of auditioning these in the early 90's. Have never heard better.
