M.A.S.S.I.V.E. and the Music Technology Group Join Forces
The Music Technology Group is pleased to announce our brand new sponsor/partner: Sheridan College. At the January 21st meetup, we’ll be joined by Sheridan’s Stephen Barden, the coordinator of their new composition program, M.A.S.S.I.V.E. (Music Applied to Stage, Screen, and Interactive Visual Environments).
M.A.S.S.I.V.E. is centered around intense collaboration with several existing and world-famous Sheridan programs – animation, film and television, music theatre and game design. Yes, you’ll find all of the usual tech at the school – Avid, Native Instruments, API, Neve, Neumann, AKG and more – and the instructors are world-class, with hundreds of feature film, television, stage and multi-platform titles amongst them. However, the unmatched experience at Sheridan is the real-world, experiential learning available through collaborative pathways that have been built with the student producers of original stage and screen content. Students in M.A.S.S.I.V.E. will be completing very few “assignments” but will be working on dozens of real projects in collaboration with writers, directors and producers that would be experienced in industry. No other program gives student composers the access to original music-ready content under one roof. At the end of their M.A.S.S.I.V.E. year, students will sprint into the industry with superior experiential learning and a lengthy demo reel of completely original work.
“I’ve been supervising the sound post-production on thesis and capstone projects at Sheridan for more than 10 years now and one thing I’ve always lamented is the difficulty faced by student producers in accessing high-quality, custom-written music for use in their projects.” says Barden. “We teach very high-end skills in prep, production and post but a large gap has existed in original scoring and composition. M.A.S.S.I.V.E. will more than fill that void.”
In addition to the composition and orchestration courses that one would expect to find in such a program, students in M.A.S.S.I.V.E. will also receive in-depth instruction in recording studio techniques, engineering, producing and specialized, industry-focused business.
