Madonna’s “Sex” Turns 20

Anyone else remember Madonna’s sex picture book?  When it was released on October 23, 1992, it caused quite a sensation with its nudie shots of Madonna and its depictions of bondage and whips and chains.  It came out the day after her Erotica album, carrying through on Madonna’s threat to become something just shy of an adult star.

In other words, if Fifty Shades of Grey floats your boat, you’d be most happy with Sex.

I haven’t seen a copy in years.  When it was released, it was too expensive to buy (I think it was $60, a fortune for a book in 1992) and I wasn’t interested in having a copy, anyway.

But now that it’s all but disappeared, it’s become rather collectible.  A check of Amazon this morning showed new copies selling for nearly $300 USD.

Gawker has a retrospective on Sex, including some quotes from Madonna and the book.  If you think this kind of talk from a pop star would be shocking now, try to imagine what it was like it 1992.
