Massive Attack is staging a gig tomorrow that they hope will change the world

Massive Attack cares greatly for the future of the planet, so they’re trying something pretty ambitious. Tomorrow (August 25), they’re holding an all-day gig called Act 1.5 in Bristol, England. Not only is it their first gig in five years, but they’re promoting it as a “large-scale climate action accelerator event” to commemorate Massive Attack’s 25-year campaign of climate activism.

What does this mean, exactly? They want this to be the lowest-carbon concert ever. It’s a proof-of-concept thing they hope will be picked up by other artists.

  • The festival will be powered by 100% renewable energy and HUGE rechargeable batteries.
  • 100% of the food will be plant-based using a local supply chain.
  • All cutlery will be compostable
  • Reusable cups at all bars for people who don’t bring their own containers.
  • Attendance is expected to be about 34,000. Everyone is being encouraged to walk, cycle, or use public transit. There are some electric buses being pressed into service. There will be no parking for cars.
  • All the loos will be compostable.
  • No waste will go to landfills
  • After the show is over, 19,000 native oak trees will be planted on a site 40 miles from the festival site.

The lineup looks like this.

  • DJ Milo
  • Sam Morton
  • Lankum
  • Killer Mike
  • Massive Attack
