More Music From The Inbox 19 Nov 2013: The Beaches, Lydia Loveless, Papermaps and More!
By: Scott Jones
Artist: The Beaches, “Loner”
Album: The Beaches
The Torontonian ladies on this album might not have been raised in New York City, but one listen would have you guessing otherwise. The hard-edged CBGB’s sound is prevalent all over the place. They love to have fun, but aren’t shy to induce sore necks from the constant head-bopping that listeners are sure to be doing while the record is on “play.”
Sounds like: Alt-post-punk that should have you contemplating buying a leather jacket.

Artist: Lydia Loveless, “Boy Crazy”
Album: Boy Crazy
Here, alt-country songstress Lydia Loveless has less of an old-school country feel than her previous full-length release, “Indestructible Machine,” with her backing band instead possessing a more energetic, down-home rock sound, but that doesn’t detract from her personal lyrics which seem to stand out even more on this short collection of tunes.
Sounds like: A fresh, honest and introspective look at country-rock, with stories from the road.

Artist: Papermaps, “Hedonist”
Album: Darker Lights
The opening verses of this featured cut will definitely strike purists as a dead-ringer for classic shoegazey riffs, and that’s what guitarist Andy Soto brings to the table in this group. At the same time, reverbed vocals and jangly rhythms merely add to the diversity of this act. A house party, as featured in this video, is quite the apt location for turning up the volume on this aggressive alt-rock release.
Sounds like: Jangly shoegaze, clearly aided by a mattress on which to jump up and down

Artist: The Glorious Sons, “Mama”
Album: Shapeless Art
Vancouver’s Glorious Sons carry with them completely the West Coast vibe, both in their music, as well as in the accompanying music video for their tune “Mama.” Brett Emmons on lead vocals immediately conjures up sonic memories of Shannon Hoon, so it’s only fair that the rest of the group follow suit with their brand of laid-back fun. Unfortunately, this IS Canada, so it’s a bit late to put the top down on a road trip. Just try, though, and imagine summer.
Sounds like: Blind Melon with a little soul

Artist: The Jezabels, “The End”
Album: The Brink
The aural soundscape surrounding this music is what helps separate this Australian act from its peers. Soaring lead vocals, jangly guitars and an ‘80s backbeat all come together to make this a unique blend of music not to be ignored. Also, their tune “The End” tells a tale about something we all must face at one time or another: The end of our rebellious youth and trying to recapture it.
Sounds like: Multi-layered power pop
