More Music from the Inbox, 20 July 2013: Sister Sparrow, Until the Ribbon Breaks, Julia Halter and More

By Scott Jones

Artist: Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds

EP: Fight

An instantly catchy tune leads off this four-track EP, with lead vocalist Arleigh Kincheloe soaring above the stratosphere projecting a tremendous amount of soulful inflection; no easy task keeping up with the fantastic horn section and backbeat of the number, but this simply proves that the entire band comes together flawlessly in their attempt to project energetic, uplifting emotion.

Sounds like: A wild mix of ‘80s-inspired dance and ‘60s-inspired soul music guaranteed to keep the party going past closing time.

Album: A Taste of Silver

The media has constantly provided us with things that have the power to make us think; whether it be in the news, the movies, or video games. Maybe it’s meeting a stranger that we don’t yet know is destined to be our friend. Who knows?  This group puts it all into focus on their track “2025”, with an accompaniment collage of various fast-paced events that make us think of how crazy the world can be sometimes.

Sounds like: A slow, reflective poppy R&B journey that assists the listener in reflecting on what’s happening around them right now.

Artist: Julia Holter

Album: Loud City Song

Pastel-coloured pop elements are included within the featured track off Julia’s third LP, and her bright, cheerful voice is a compliment to the slow, neo-classical beats within the confines of the track.  This video showcases a slideshow of the album recording process in the studio, highly reminiscent of the end credits of Almost Famous where all of William’s Polaroids capture life on the road.

Sounds like: Baroque and psychedelic pop transporting the listener to a Parisian restaurant.

Artist: Humfree Bug Art

Track: Flowers

Sometimes, it’s easy to get an idea of what a song might sound like simply by analyzing the title; this Swedish indie outfit’s music is no exception. They are proud to present to the listener some truly sweet rhythms and joyous singalong choruses that make you appreciate your garden just a little bit more.

Sounds like: Carefree retro-pop that represent all the colours of a botanical excursion on a sunny summer’s day.

Artist: Future History

Album: Lungs

This rock ensemble, from the backwoods of Ontario, are very capable of projecting their vision on starting over from the ground up in the lyrics of this featured cut, “With Haste.”  Once in a while, you just have to take a trip around the forest surrounding an old cabin to try and find yourself and discover what’s needed to make a positive change.

Sounds like: Alternative rock for the conscious thinker.
