By Scott Jones

Artist: Josh Martinez

Album: Blotto

This solo cut from Josh Martinez is living proof that the first half of the Chicharones stays true to his roots with a fresh, indie-pop hip-hop sound highly reminiscent of his band’s recent tune “Hi Hey Hello”, that spawned over four million views on YouTube. Josh definitely wears all of his vocal harmony/reggae/rap influences on his sleeve on this cut, and will have you begging for more.

Sounds like: Soulful, melodic indie-rap.

Artist: Katie Bulley

Track: Chasing

This young lady has recently sought change after her departure as lead singer from her raucous, energy-filled group “The Barettas” with a sit-down, indie-singer-songwriter vibe that allowed her to incorporate more personal material with the aid of a six-string acoustic instrument. She possesses a style that conjures a mash of early ’70s Bonnie Raitt blues intimacy with a splash of Zooey Deschanel charm and wit. Both women wouldn’t hesitate to raise an eyebrow or two after listening to the vocals emanating from that microphone of hers. You will, too.

Sounds like: Music to assist you in finding your way in the world.

Artist: Tati Ana

Track: Four Walls

This is heavy. A supreme voice this commanding equally commands slick production and attention to the vocals and the music surrounding the woman projecting them. The slowly-paced electronic-industrial beats bouncing from wall to wall will have you glued to your seat. Try listening to it with your eyes closed, and you will feel like you’re on a journey to another galaxy.

Sounds like: An exercise of the mind that dares break the fourth wall.

Artist: Invasions

Track: Rosy

Whoa….this tune is great, but even better if you know how to go-go dance. The lyrics are plucked from a darkened beach somewhere in California, where a select few have the guts to hang ten in the middle of the night. Much like the “rosy glow” punctuated in the tune’s intense chorus, this band will keep you coming back.

Sounds like: A backdrop to surfing after sunset, with a plethora of dancers grooving in the evening sand.

Album: Wildewoman

The Brill Building is an office building in Manhattan, where countless American hits were written, and in this case, the music you will hear in this video is highly reminiscent of tunes penned in these offices in the early ’60s. Brill is a name, but it could easily be used as a synonym for “morale”, with tunes such as “On Broadway” and “The Locomotion”. So in a way, it makes perfect sense that this group also hails from the Big Apple, as they would have been a perfect fit alongside The Drifters and Little Eva. Snap your fingers, folks.

Sounds like: A genuine and creative NYC group that Jerry Goffin and Carole King would be proud of.
