MusiCounts announced an Indigenous music resource

MusiCounts is Canada’s big music education charity and takes up so much of the slack when it comes to exposing young people to the glories and benefits of learning how to play an instrument.

The newest initiative is called Kanata: Contemporary Indigenous Artists and Their Music. It’s a resource that will help teachers bring Indigenous voices, perspectives and music into classrooms. It’s available to “any grade 7 to 12 music or social studies educator to explore and celebrate contemporary Indigenous music in the classroom in a way that is authentic, respectful, and culturally appropriate.”

Here’s more:

“The teacher resource guide explores the music of Jeremy Dutcher, Silla and Rise, and theSnotty Nose Rez Kids. The three artists contributed videos in which students can learn about this music directly from the artists involved. With a blend of genres including rap, classical, and electronic dance music, this resource will act as a pathway through which students will understand that Indigenous music is an evolving and diverse practice spanning many genres and sounds.”

Everything is free to use. You can access the material here.
