Need music to inspire creativity? This study says these artists are the best. (Hint: Start with alt-rock.)

There have been plenty of studies linking music listening with creativity. Here’s another from Origami.org that would like us to believe that someone has unlocked the secrets of which song to listen to for maximum inspiration.

The study began by examining 170 playlists “curated by creatives.” They also talked to 502 visual artists to find out what kind of music turned them on creatively. Their findings include:

  • If you’re working a space that involves creative visuals, alt-rock, indie rock, and rock are the best for inspiration.
  • Arctic Monkeys, Taylor Swift, and Lana Del Rey are the three most popular artists to listen to during times where creativity is wanted.
  • Visual artists listen to music 70% of the time they’re working on something creative. About 80% of them say that music boosts their creativity.
  • If they listen to music, their period of inspired time lasts 1.6 hours longer if they listen to alt-rock than those sessions that are done in silence.
  • There’s this chart that spells out the best artists from different genres.
