New Documentary on Nelson Mandela Explores the Power of Music

One of the most moving experiences I’ve ever had was visiting Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. How the man not only managed to maintain his sanity but his grace is beyond me. 

A new documentary by Canadian filmmaker Jason Bourque will look at the role of music in Mandela’s life. From the BBC:

Nelson Mandela once said: “Music is a great blessing. It has the power to elevate and liberate us. It sets people free to dream. It can unite us to sing with one voice. Such is the value of music.”

With the spotlight on the former South African president’s health over the last few weeks, Canadian filmmaker Jason Bourque has seen a surge in interest in a documentary he shot in 2011.

Music for Mandela examines how Nelson Mandela has used music both personally and politically throughout his life.
