New Music From The Inbox, 18 Jan 2016: Ursa Major, Mark Martyre, Bonnie Raitt, Merival, Holy Wave
By: Juliette Jagger (@juliettejagger)
Artist: Ursa Major “Dusk”
Album: Single
Ursa Major, where does one even begin? This kid is a Toronto based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, and I would be very surprised if someone doesn’t scoop him up in the next couple of years. “Dusk” is a standout track. It exists within that same realm of bedroom R&B that has become synonymous with The Weeknd, it’s bold, raw, and breathless, and it relishes in the hyper-sexualized fearlessness of youth. It’s part love song part confessional and it has a killer hook. This guy’s gunna be a hit.

Artist: Mark Martyre “Maria, I Still Believe”
Album: Single
Damn. That’s all I can say about this latest offering from Mark Martyre. “Maria, I Still Believe” is a classic. Wry and wrought with emotion.

Artist: Bonnie Raitt “Gypsy In Me”
Album: Dig In Deep
Off of her forthcoming 20th album, Dig In Deep, “Gypsy In Me” from the legendary Ms. Bonnie Raitt is the kind of down and dirty blues that you feel in your bones. I mean there are only 6 notes in a blues scale, and as a genre the blues is more than 100-years-old, a song of this caliber is a true testament to Raitt’s abilities as a songwriter.

Artist: Merival “Kicking You Out”
Album: Lovers
Off of her forthcoming EP, Lovers, which is due out on January 29th, “Kicking You Out” from Merival is a brokenhearted love song about having to push someone out of your mind, particularly after they are no longer welcome to reside there.

Off of their forthcoming EP, Freaks of Nature, which is due out March 11, “California Took My Bobby Away” from Holy Wave combines the fluidity of surf rock with droning guitars and melancholic vocals awash in the warmth of a dreamy haze.
