New Music from the Inbox: Jamie XX, Doechii, Maya Delilah, and more!

Artist: Jamie xx feat. Erykah Badu
Song: F.U.
Album: In Waves (Deluxe)

A collab between Jamie xx and US soul icon Erykah Badu? Yes please! The press release explains that“The genesis of the collaboration came at a Primavera Festival after-party that both Jamie and Badu were due to play. After Badu’s equipment broke down on stage during her performance, she was forced to ad-lib, just her and a mic. Jamie, in the crowd, recorded the whole expletive-filled happening on his phone, ultimately turned it into a track during the In Waves recording sessions, reconnected with Badu back in London, and the rest is history.

Artist: Doechii
Song: Nosebleeds

Everything Doechii does overflows with wit, candor, and well-earned confidence, including this new single, which she wrote and recorded especially to celebrate her GRAMMY win for Best Rap Album.

Artist: Maya Delilah
Song: Look At The State Of Me Now

This is a funky AF lead single from formidable guitar player Maya Delilah’s forthcoming debut album. She explains: “‘Look At The State Of Me Now’ is about looking at yourself at the breaking point in a relationship. There’s a big part of you that wants to stay but you also know you’d be crazy if you did. It’s about feeling conflicted as the other side of you wants to make it work. I’m sure so many people have felt this way just like myself. I always love writing in the time signature 6/8 as it feels so much more emotive to me, and as this song is about heartbreak it felt fitting.”

Artist: Mdou Moctar
Song: Funeral for Justice (Injustice Version)
Album: Tears of Injustice

Mdou Moctar is putting out an acoustic version of their 2024 album Funeral for Justice and this is the first single. The story behind this acoustic album is wild: “The album owes its existence to a national catastrophe. In July of 2023, Mdou Moctar was on tour in the United States when the president of Niger was deposed in a coup. Band members Mdou Moctar, Ahmoudou Madassane, and Souleymane Ibrahim were left unable to return home to their families. They decided to seize the opportunity to record a companion to Funeral for Justice, one that reflected the newer and graver circumstances at home. Two days after the tour wrapped in New York City, the quartet began tracking Tears of Injustice at Brooklyn’s Bunker Studio with engineer Seth Manchester.”
