New Music From The Inbox: LYON, The Last Sun, Fast Romantics, Cleo Sol & WRITER

By Juliette Jagger

Artist: LYON “Indian Summer”
Album:
Indian Summer
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Toronto’s LYON perform a few times over the past year and there always seems to be this very distinct presence in the room. While her demeanor is quiet and unassuming, her voice is full of the heartache, disillusionment, and ultimately hope that clearly came together to make this record.

Ps. You’ve gotta see her perform Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Sounds like: Recovery.

Artist: The Last Sun “Such A Fan”
Album:
The Last Sun EP
The Last Sun is Montreal native Dave Nugent (best known for his role as lead guitarist in the Sam Roberts Band), and this song straight rocks. It has just the right amount of vocal strangeness to make it intriguing – kind of reminds me of Beck – but it’s punched up by these raspy guitars that just scratch away at the background.

Sounds like:  “Heading in the wrong direction, drinking for my own protection.”

Artist: Fast Romantics “Funeral Song”
Album:
Afterlife Blues
You can expect to see this one on the Fast Romantic’s upcoming second LP, Afterlife Blues, which drops October 8th of this year. “Funeral Song” has that familiar gritty and enduring sorrow that the folk / country acts tend to do so well, but then it seamlessly incorporates these boisterous group harmonies that we’d expect to hear from the likes of Arcade Fire.

Sounds like: “I set out to sail the moon and I came back a lonely man.”

Artist: Cleo Sol “Teardrop”
Album:
Single
This is an interesting take on a few famous Brit tunes. “Teardrop” is a mash-up of The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” and opening lyrics from Cleo Sol.

Sounds like:Retro-futuristic soul-pop”

Artist: WRITER “IE”
Album:
I Make Neon
WRITER is California born, Brooklyn based duo James and Andy Ralph. They’re also brothers.

Sounds like: Noise melodica.
