New Music From The Inbox – Monday Edition! (Oct 31, 2022): Elke, The Academic, MUNNYCAT, and more!

Every week, we’re sent dozens if not hundreds of promotional emails from agents, PR firms, and hopeful artists containing the latest releases from around the world. From the biggest superstars to the ambitious self-starters we comb through it all to highlight to you what we’ve been digging, the tunes that caught our eye, and the recommended selections that make the notifications worth it. This is New Music From The Inbox! (Short on time? Listen to this article in playlist form!)

Artist: Elke

Song: ‘Call Of The Void’

Album/EP: My “Human Experience”

Grimy and loud rock and roll that isn’t scared to get messy, ‘Call Of The Void’ keeps its foot on the gas for all of its nearly-two-minute careening runtime. Guitars so blown out they’re hardly distinguishable, shout-sung vocals that are nearly always doubled up, and a glorious turmoil of sound and power chords put a bow on this arresting disarray.

Watch/Listen:

Artist: The Academic

Song: ‘Pushing Up Daisies’

Album/EP: Sitting Pretty

Toothy guitar tones alongside a subtle blues lilt set up a tasty contrast in ‘Pushing Up Daisies’. Like the petals eventually poking through soil, The Academic’s bright and precise melodies get to meandering in the crystalline choruses otherwise surrounded by chugging, fuzzy verses. It’s a catchy study in rock opposites!

Watch/Listen:

Artist: MUNNYCAT

Song: ‘honest’

Album/EP: age of the scorpio

Power-pop duo MUNNYCAT score originality points with their honky-tonking piano hook in ‘honest’, but don’t shy away from the other ingredients that make a bonafide banger: thumping bass, nonchalantly ear-wormy vocals, and plenty of rhythmic breathing room all hit their mark. And good goddamn, if this isn’t some catchy shit.

Watch/Listen:

Artist: Badge Époque Ensemble & Lammping

Song: ‘Naturally Conspiring’ feat. Boldy James & Roshin

Album/EP: Clouds of Joy: Chance of Reign

Warm and crackling remixed Badge Époque Ensemble instrumentals lay a moody base for the relaxed flow of featured rappers Boldy James and Roshin in ‘Naturally Conspiring’. Distant and gentle flutes, harmonic backings, backbeat drums beg for a vinyl release in this old-school late-night hip hop cruiser.

Watch/Listen:

Artist: Rebounder

Song: ‘Factoury Girl’

Album/EP: Sundress Songs

A chilled drum beat, pillowy layered vocals, and relaxed production that allows the parts of ‘Factoury Girl’ to mingle and melt together yield a dreamy single for Brooklyn DIY indie group Rebounder. This is a single fit for drooping eyelids, reclined poses, and smoky rooms.

Watch/Listen:

Artist: Domanique Grant

Song: ‘QueenDom’

Album/EP: Single

It’s been a while since a week’s offerings have been consistently solid enough to warrant a full six song article, but Torontonian Domanique Grant finally brings us home with ‘QueenDom’. A bold and spacious backing beat leaves plenty of space for Grant’s unrestrained, lioness-themed bars. The passion behind this single is palpable.

Mathew Kahansky

Once upon a time, Mat studied journalism. That's how he became Alan's one-time intern and current-time contributor, and the rest is ongoing history - get it? Mat also studied biology and music, so he has a strangely specific knowledge set that doesn't really apply anywhere other than useless fun facts. He currently works for a music tech start-up in Halifax, and is a big fan of the em dash.
