New Music From The Inbox: Secret Colours, Mister Suit, Lou Doillon, My Sister Ocean, & Emilia

By Juliette Jagger

Artist: Secret Colours “Blackhole”
Album: Peach

Chicago’s Secret Colours captures the eerie darkness of UK post-punk, threads it to 90’s Britpop, and ties it off while you sink in and completely checkout.

Sounds like: There’s something happening here and this song sold me. I’ll definitely be keepin’ an eye on this band.

Artist: Mister Suit’s “Can’t Be Found”
Album:
Single
There is something fresh and offbeat about this one from Mister Suit – real raspy vocals, brash guitars, a spacey little synth hook, and to the point delivery.

Sounds like:  Looking for you.

Artist: Lou Doillon “ ICU”
Album:
Places
Doillon possess one of those bold voices that doesn’t quite look like it’s meant to come out of such a beautiful, slender frame.

Sounds like: Patty Smith.

Artist: My Sister Ocean Ft. Jay Sparrow “Mountain Hound”
Album:
coLAB
This song is absolutely made by the chorus, and sometimes that’s all you need. Granted it’s one chord shy of being cock rock but I’ll take it.

Sounds like: Woo hoo.

Artist: Emilia “Closer All The Time”
Album:
Flying Colours
There is something playful and Nora Jones-esc about Emilia’s vocals but she punches them up with a Jason Mraz flavoured island appeal.

Sounds like: Bubbly breezy pop.

Emilia, in my humble opinion, is one of the most talented young new singer/songwriters to come along in some time. The debut EP "Flying Colors", provides only a glimpse of the talent that lies within, and the first single "Closer All The Time", is a pop gem. Already looking forward to the full length CD planned for 2014.
