New Music From The Inbox 07 April 2014: Sleepy Sun, Seasick Mama, Walrus, My Pet Genius, I Have A Tribe

By: Juliette Jagger

Artist: Sleepy Sun “Galaxy Punk”
Album: Maui Tears

Hooky, fuzzed-out, mind-bending psyche-rock.

Sounds like: “One of these days I’m gunna show you how.”

Artist: Seasick Mama “Gimme Something To Work With”
Tip Top Shape

Having already been described as a cross between the fierceness of Karen O and the dark provocateur that is Lykke Li, Seasick Mama is an indie pop rock powerhouse. The girl is on fire.

Sounds like: “I didn’t ask you to solve my problems, I didn’t ask you to close the gap.”

Artist: Walrus “Bulash”
Glam Returns

Psychedelic surf rock from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Sounds like: Gloriously infectious.

Artist: My Pet Genius “Black Mesa Rally Cry”
Having planted their roots back in the 90’s it only makes sense that MPG possesses that particular weightiness that came to define so many of the decades’ alt-rock bands. That being said, they also have this great shoegaze-y drone that immediately recalls the genre’s Brit rock origins.

Sounds like: “You’ll never know the smirk behind that smile.”

Artist: I Have A Tribe “Yellow Raincoats”
Yellow Raincoat EP
Delicate and never too quick to reveal itself, there is something about this track that speaks to that which resides in the dim, dark corners of the heart.

Sounds like: “So save your soul, it is the best one
