A New Nickelback Single is Coming on Tuesday–And I’m Happy About That.

On Tuesday, The World’s Most Ridiculed/Hated Rock Band™ will release the first single from their new still-united album.  Called “Edge of a Revolution,” this will be their first release on their new label, Republic Records.

Sneer all you want, but Nickelback remains HUGE in that vast space between the coasts.  Critics, hipsters and “serious” music fans have made a sport of ridiculing Chad & Co. over the last ten years or so, but the fact of the matter is the band has millions of fans who know all the words to all the songs, buy all the records, go to all the shows and snap up all the t-shirts.

This is a good thing for a number of reasons which I outline here.

The music industry has done a shitty, shitty job of creating new superstar rock acts in the 21st century; Nickelback is one of them.  And whether you want to believe it or not, Nickelback is a gateway drug to the greater world of rock’n’roll for many, many music fans.  And with the music industry really struggling this year–sales are down double digits from this time last year on both sides of the border–anything that will drive excitement and interest (and even hate!) will be a good for everyone.

You don’t have to like Nickelback.  But if you’re a true student of the rock’n’roll experience, you’ll understand why they’re necessary.
