When The Verve finally hit it big in the late 90s, singer Richard Ashcroft took some of his money and plunked £500,000 into a country estate called Taynton House, a 17th century house set on an expansive property that came complete with wandering peacocks, a secret garden, an ornamental pond and, er, a bull ring.
He still lives there with wife Kate (she of Spiritualized), but he’s feeling a little cramped, apparently.
The estate also features a lodge that’s seen better days. Richard wants to tear it down and build a slightly larger and more contemporary structure. Naturally, the local conservationists are up in arms about this.
