NFL ratings are an eight-year high. Who gets the credit? Guess.
Talk to any serious NFL fan about the 2023 season and they’ll tell that unless you’re a fan of the Cowboys, Ravens, Lions, or 49ers, it was a pretty dull season. But league executives don’t care. The league is stronger and more popular than ever with TV ratings at an eight-year high.
Nielsen, the TV people, say that each NFL game attracted on average 17.9 million viewers. That’s up 7% from 2022 and the best since 2015. Sunday Night Football did even better, with an average of 21.4 million viewers. Monday Night Football, something that was once written off as past its time, saw its viewership increase by a whopping 30%.
Speculation is that these increased numbers have a lot to do with the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce storyline. Tay-Tay’s obliquitous presence at games featuring the Kansas City Chiefs brought in tons of new young female viewers, contributing to an overall league-wide lift for ratings.
Wild, no? The NFL had better hope that this romance continues forever.
