Now that the new Beatles single is out, let’s look at the latest upcoming re-releases

No one is better at maintaining a musical legacy than the organization behind the Beatles. Every year, there’s a new reissue, compilation, box set, or documentary that tastefully recycles the band’s oeuvre for multiple generations. Next up: The “red” and “blue” greatest hits collections.

It’s hard to overemphasize how important those “red” and “blue” collections were to a generation of budding music fans.

The “blue” compilation, a Christmas gift sometime in the middle 70s, was my first real introduction to The Beatles. Here, for the first time, were all these songs that I’d heard on the transistor radio my grandmother gave me for my sixth birthday. I distinctly remember hauling an old portable Silvertone turntable (purchased through the Simpson-Sears catalogue) on Christmas vacation just so I could listen to the double album in our hotel room. I think I may have even begged my mom to buy me the “red” compilation that same week at some record store at the West Acres Mall in Fargo, North Dakota. (Hey, that was an exotic vacation for us back then!)

The “red” and “blue” collections will be out in revamped and expanded forms next Friday (November 10). Both will be available to stream, as a digital package, as a double CD set, and as a three 180-gram coloured vinyl set (in red and blue, of course). There will also be a four-CD version and a six-LP vinyl set in either black or red/blue. And yes, there are Dolby ATMOS versions for immersive listening.

Giles Martin, son of George and the guy who has done more work on Beatles material than everyone else, has this to say about the project (via Variety):

“I have to say that I think the Atmos mixes of these songs, or just the new stereos, are probably the most groundbreaking things that I’ve been involved with of the Beatles. I mean, I really do. I was surprised. And as you know, I do embrace this technological side. What’s great about the opportunities that I get is that I can apply new technology that we’re inventing to an old catalog that deserves it, and that has a tradition of breaking new ground and breaking new boundaries.”
