Movies

One of today’s most viral songs was released in 2001. It’s the Saltburn effect.

Where you love, hate, or are confused by the movie Saltburn, it’s become the most talked-about film of the last few months. I don’t care who you are. That graveyard scene is too weird and disturbing for words.

The story is set in 2006-07 and there are several party scenes featuring music of that period. One features this track by British singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor. It was originally released in 2001.

Just like we saw with Stranger Things and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” this is a case of a song being given a second life as a result of placement in a TV show or movie. Once people the film, they wanted to know more about this song. “Murder on the Dance Floor” is now at #1 on Spotify’s Viral 50-USA chart.

Sophie isn’t alone, either. “Perfect (Exceeder),” a 2006 track by Mason and Princess Superstar is also in Saltburn. It’s at #6 on the chart.
