Ongoing History Daily: Another weird record alert

Actor Ryan Gosling is a Canadian treasure that just keeps on giving. Yes, he was excellent as Ken in the Barbie movie, but he’s also a Goth musician. His music career started in 2007 when he posted a song called “Put Me in the Car.”

A little later, he and his buddy Zach Shields formed a gothy, folky indie band called Dead Mans Bones. Gosling was on vocals, guitar, bass, piano, and cello. Backup vocals were provided by the Silverlake Conservatory’s Children’s Choir. When the self-titled album was released in October 2009, it got some very good reviews from sites like Pitchfork. There was a tour with things like glowing dancing skeletons onstage. Every stop on the road trip featured a guest appearance from a local children’s choir.

Gosling has said he’d like to do a second Dead Man’s Bones album but so far, nothing.
