Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History Daily: Beck Facts

Here are some miscellaneous bits of deep background on Beck.

First, his father was Canadian. David Campbell was born in Toronto. His father was from Winnipeg. Beck’s dad later became an in-demand arranger and has worked on albums by Muse, Adele, Michael Jackson, Linkin Park and Justin Timberlake. The first album he worked on was Carole King’s Tapestry.

Second, his mom is Bibbe Hansen, a former Andy Warhol hanger-on back in the 60s. She was also one of the dancers seen in the finale of the Brian De Palma movie, Phantom of the Paradise.  And if you want to go even deeper, Beck’s mom recorded an album with writer Jack Kerouac in a band called The Whippets in 1964. And she once performance with a drag queen performance artist named Vaginal Davis.

Knowing what his parents were like helps explain Beck a little more, doesn’t it?
