Ongoing History Daily: Blur’s Alex James in space

The stereotype of the rock star is one of sex and drugs and bad behaviour.  Maybe, but it’s also possible to be quite brainy.

Take Alex James of Blur.  He’s always been something of a space and astronomy nut.  In fact, he managed to get himself involved in the British space program and the doomed Beagle 2 Mars probe back in 2003.  Alex also spent two years at the University of Bath getting his honours degree in astrophysics and later served as the official “artist in residence” in the astrophysics department at Oxford University.

And when he’s not looking at the stars, Alex is making cheese.  He’s an actual master cheese maker, living on a farm in the Cotswolds region of the England.
