Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History Daily: Creepiest.  Recording Studio.  Ever.

One of the strangest addresses for a recording studio was 10050 Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills.  It’s a house, up on hill, where Trent Reznor recorded The Downward Spiral.

When a real estate agent showed him the house, Trent couldn’t figure out why the rent was so cheap. It was only later that he found out that the house was the site of some of the famous Manson Family murders in 1969. In fact, everything you hear on The Downward Spiral was recorded in the same room where actress Sharon Tate and her friend Jay Sebring were stabbed. Two more people died out on the lawn. A fifth person was shot out in the driveway.

The house doesn’t exist anymore.  It was damaged in an earthquake in 1994 and was torn down to make room for a new house in May 1994.
