Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History Daily: David Bowie kept priceless works of art in his car? Yes.

David Bowie was one of the great autodidacts in the history of music. He was obsessed with learning as much about the arts as he could. Not only was he a voracious reader, but he was a painter and a collector of fine art. By the time he died, he had amassed an amazing collection of paintings worth millions and millions of dollars.

When he was living in New York, he purchased the exact kind of Lincoln limo that appeared in the 1976 film, The Man Who Fell to Earth. In place of one of the vanity mirrors was a tiny painting by Picasso. The other had been replaced by a painting by Matisse.

Those vanity mirror replacements were probably worth hundreds and hundreds more than the car in which they were stored.
