Ongoing History Daily: How many women are there in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Er…

It’s an understatement to say that rock has been dominated by dudes since its birth in the early 1950s. Consequently, most of the inductees in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are male. But did you know how big this gender imbalance is?

As of the end of 2024, there 949 people in the Hall. Of those, only 80 are women. That’s just 8.4% of the total. This leaves the Hall open to all kinds of criticism. It also partly explains why we’ve seen a push to nominate and induct more women, even if it means looking at inducting Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, the women in ABBA, Janet Jackson, and Dolly Parton.

Navigating the politics of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a nightmare.
