Ongoing History Daily: Måneskin facts

Italy’s Måneskinis a rare thing: A rock band who managed to win the Eurovision Song Contest, a title that almost always goes to some kind of pop act. When they won in 2021, it was the first time a rock band had won since Lordi, the strange Finnish band took the title in 2006. Before that, we might pick Katrina and the Waves who won in 1997.

And this explains something: Even though they’re from Rome, their name is Danish. Bass player Victoria De Angelis whose family comes from Denmark, suggested “Måneskin,” which is Danish for “moonlight.” It also explains the little circle we’re supposed to include above the “a” in their name. Danish alphabet, you know.
