Ongoing History Daily: Matt Shultz (Cage the Elephant) and his battle with ADHD

Cage the Elephant singer Matt Schultz has always been very upfront about his issues with addictions and his mental health struggles. He has a particularly intense ADHD problem, one that has led him into periods of psychosis. He describes those times as being “besieged.”

He says “In a sense, your mind is being hijacked and you go into a state of hypervigilance and paranoia, and, sadly, delusions.” He continues: “I believe that I was being chased by ‘they’—whoever ‘they’ was. It was a nightmarish life. It was a state of panic 24/7.”

This continued for four or five years while Cage the Elephant continued their recording and touring commitments. Matt finally received the exact help he needed. He says that surviving this frightening and terrifying time was nothing less than a miracle.
