Ongoing History Daily: Metal is good for your mental health

If you’re into metal, even a little bit, chances are you have a different view of death than other music fans. Metal, says science, helps people come to terms with their mortality.

A study published in The Journal of Psychology of Popular Music says you can’t spend all kinds of time listening to death-themed music without learning something about yourself. Specifically, this kind of music helps drive home the point that life is short and then you die, which, in turn, can foster an attitude of living in the moment and making the most of your time on earth.

These findings support a psychological concept called “terror management theory.” In other words, if you face your fears head-on, you’ll have a better chance of conquering them. In other words, science says listening to metal is good for your mental health.
