Ongoing History Daily: Music and wine

There seems to be no end to the magic music can do. In the past, we’ve heard how the right music can make sewage-eating microbes do their business faster and more efficiently. Now someone is suggesting that the right music can help age wine properly.

Markus Bachmann works for an Austrian winemaker and the inventor of a special speaker that plays music to wines in the vault. This speaker is put inside the barrels of wine and the music is said to interact with the yeast in the fermentation process. He says that instead of the yeast making methyl alcohol, it makes glycerin alcohol, which is something that you normally get in fine aged wine.

The yeast isn’t that picky about music, either. All that’s really necessary is that the music be in a major key–preferably C major. They swear that it works.
