Ongoing History Daily: Oasis and “Supersonic”

When Oasis was signed to Creation Records and was told it was time to make an album, they really didn’t have a lot of material. When they went into the studio, they spent days recording songs that weren’t all that good or weren’t coming together properly.

Alan McGee, the head of Creation, laid it on the line: “Why don’t you do something really worthwhile?” Noel Gallagher took up the challenge and went into the back room of the studio and cranked out “Supersonic” in one sitting.

Yeah, the lyrics don’t make a lot of sense (Elsa is actually the studio dog who got really gassy after getting into some Alka-Seltzer). It worked. “Supersonic” gave Oasis their first proper hit. Within a few months, the band would begin a run of 21 consecutive singles in the UK top ten.
