Ongoing History Daily: Peak Weezer?

Over the years, Rivers Cuomo has proven himself to be an extremely prolific songwriter, resulting in a lot of Weezer albums and EPs. There are fifteen studio albums, ten EPs, at least 37 singles, and more than 40 music videos. This is from a band that released only two albums in the 90s.

That’s a lot of music. But is it too much? Rivers seems to think so.

He said this in a podcast called This Little Light hosted by Flea of the Chili Peppers: “I think, if I were to go back and plan out an ideal artist’s career, I don’t know — maybe there’s too much quantity. Maybe the whole thing would be more impactful if we could go back in time and just release the very best stuff. Cherry-pick and release it in a very strategic way. But hindsight is 20/20, and hopefully, future generations will sort it all out and they’ll focus on the best stuff.”

In other words, maybe sometimes less is more.

  • Kinda wish they’d stopped with their first album and remained a myth.

I loved Pinkerton too as a kid, but I feel it’s so extremely cringe on hindsight, and I was just so disappointed with the band from their third album onward.
