Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History Daily: Pearl Jam, Survivors

Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 and outlasted so many of their peers from the original grunge era. Think about it. Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley and Mike Starr of Alice in Chains, Chris Cornell, Mark Lanegan and Van Connor of Screaming Trees, John Baker Saunders of Mad Season, Kristen Pfaff of Hole, —they’re all gone, but the four guys in Pearl Jam are still with us and still together.

We can even bring this number up to five because drummer Matt Cameron (who didn’t join the group full-time until 1998) played on Pearl Jam’s original demos.

Given Eddie Vedder’s predilection for doing dangerous things like diving off lighting rigs into the audience, no one back in 1994 expected Pearl Jam to be the survivors they are.
