Ongoing History Daily: Pre-Foos Dave

Before he formed the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl was in, of course, Nirvana.  But what did he do before he hooked up with Kurt?  Dave was in a Washington, DC-based band called Scream.

The roots of this band go back to at least 1982 and were formed at the very end of the very first explosion of hardcore punk in the DC area.  The core of the band was two brothers: Peter Stahl, the singer, and Franz Stahl.  They released a couple of albums between 1982 and 1987 before they hooked up with this 18-year-old kid named Dave Grohl, giving young Dave his first chance at playing with a professional touring group.

If you want to hear what Dave sounded like back then, see if you can find a 1988 album called No More Censorship.  Dave plays drums and does backup vocals as well as lead vocals on one song.  His first shot at writing songs came with the next record, which is called Fumble.  If you’re a Foos fan, it’s worth digging up.

The last Ongoing History Daily post looked at the origin of some band names.
