Ongoing History Daily: Rich rock stars and their private islands

When you make enough money, you may have enough to find someplace very private to escape the hassles of being a celebrity. Why not buy yourself a private island?

Nick Hexum of 311 did just that. He was once the owner of the five-and-a-quarter acre Melody Key in the Florida Keys. It featured a luxury house and everything you needed to have fun on the water. He sold it in 2017 for $7 million.

Lenny Kravtiz has a spot unto himself in the Eleuthera Archipelago of the Bahamas. All he needs there is a single trailer and some gear to record music. That’s it.

But the most opulent of them all might be the 74-acre Necker Island which is owned by Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Records. It’s in the Virgin Islands—where else?—and is available for rent. But if you have to ask how much a week goes for, it’s not for you.
