Ongoing History Daily: “Running Up That Hill” year-end stats

As we approach the end of the year, one person who is counting her blessings (and money) is Kate Bush for the unexpected viral success of “Running Up That Hill” thanks to its appearance in season four of the Netflix series, Stranger Things. The song was originally released in 1985 and did okay, reaching the top ten in countries around the world.

But after it was featured in Stranger Things in 2022, it blew up, reaching number one on the singles charts in eight countries and all the way up to number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Streams increased by over 20,000%.

And it’s estimated that Kate made an unexpected extra $2.3 million US in 2022. That’s why we’re seeing so many artists willing to roll the dice with a sync deal with a TV series.
