Ongoing History Daily: Strange vinyl variants, part 3

Here’s one more look at some really strange and fun collectible vinyl.

Back in 2016, a special version of the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released. It features some really cool 3D technology that results in holograms of the Millennium Falcon and a TIE fighter as the record spins. I have no idea how this works, but it’s a really cool visual effect.

Something similar appeared for Record Store Day in 2013 when Kate Bush issued a 12-inch of “Running Up That Hill.” Using old-school zoetrope technology—something that dates back to the Victorian era—it looks like some fish people on the disc are running.

And we can’t end this list without something weird from Third Man Records. Jack White’s label has lots of strange stuff, but one of my favourites is a “triple-decker” record. It’s a 7-inch by The Dead Weather inside a 12-inch. The only way to get to the 7-inch is to break away the 12-inch on the outside.
