Ongoing History Daily: The Killers’ hit born out of an inability to pick up girls

When The Killers were first starting out in Las Vegas in the early 2000s, the guys in the band hung out in clubs looking to hook up. They were not successful, and the frustration was substantial. Singer Brandon Flowers says the result was the song “Somebody Told Me.”

“We were going out to clubs a lot of time,” he said, “It speaks to the frustration of not being able to pick up girls.”

Wait a second, you think, isn’t Brandon a good Mormon boy? What was he doing trying to pick up girls in clubs—in Las Vegas, of all places? Back then, he wasn’t exactly a GOOD Mormon and did have his rock’n’roll period. He didn’t get serious about religion until 2007 when his first child was born. Now he’s an official spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.
