Ongoing History Daily: The lost Stone Temple Pilots spin-off

Stone Temple Pilots’ career got off to a roaring start with a couple of solid albums. But then singer Scott Weiland’s drug issues started getting in the way. He ODed, was arrested for drunk driving and drugs, and generally became so unreliable that the other three members of the group decided to move on.

In 1997, they formed a new band called Talk Show with singer David Coutts. Although it wasn’t what I’d call a bad album, it paled in comparison to what STP had done. The album was pretty much dead on arrival, selling less than 20,000 copies—and this was the era when people were buying CDs by the boatload.

Talk Show lasted just that one album. David Couts was fired, Talk Show was shelved, and eventually, Weiland was brought back into the band—until he was fired again for drug use.
