Ongoing History Daily: The millions of unheard songs no one talks about

Here is great news for musicians: It has never been easier or cheaper to make your music available to everyone on planet Earth. Here’s the bad news: there are millions of musicians who know this.

It’s estimated that somewhere around 100,000 new songs are being uploaded to the streaming music services every single day. There are somewhere beyond 110 million songs available to be streamed. That is way too many for the eight billion souls out there.

Another estimate says that somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of all those songs have never been streamed even once. That means somewhere north of 22 million songs on, say, Spotify, have never been heard by anyone but their creators.

If you have a Spotify account, sign into a site called Forgotify and you will hear some of these songs. And you will be the only one.
