Ongoing History Daily: The rock contribution of Suzi Fussey

In the early 1970s, Suzi Fussey worked at a hair salon in the Beckingham area of London. One of her steady customers was a woman named Peggy Jones. She had a son named David, a singer, who went by the name David Bowie.

Through an introduction by Peggy, David’s wife, Angie, visited Suzi at the salon and was impressed. She encouraged David to try Suzi for a new look. He agreed and visited the salon in late 1971.

Suzi’s solution was a puffball-type spikey haircut dyed quite red, something that no one had ever seen before. This was the look Bowie took into his Ziggy Stardust years.

The “Ziggy Cut,” as it has become known, became an essential part of Bowie’s image at that time and helped propel him towards superstardom. Hey, thanks, mom!
